Anyone for ‘Scrub-Bashing’…

by Mike Westby

Sunrise on the Estate

On the 12th October we welcomed a group of 9 volunteers from the Commercial Finance team of Waitrose, who were holding a team day down in Leckford.

The morning was to be spent by the team supporting the Trust on the 'Juniper Bank' reserve, where the team’s task was to clear the scrub (hawthorn, privet, elder, bramble, spindleberry) to open up the bank to allow the sunlight back in, which will enable the wildlife to flourish.

The day kicked off at the Field Centre with a briefing by Trust members Alan Wilson & Nick Sotherton, accompanied by freshly baked pastries, before the team headed off to the reserve, which involved a bracing walk up (& down) the hill to the site.

In what was perfect weather, the team did a fantastic job, skillfully guided by Glynne Evans & Nick, working tirelessly throughout the morning clearing some serious scrub before returning to the Field Centre for a hearty lunch, provided by the Trust and superbly prepared by Sue Parish, a Friend of the Trust.

In the afternoon the team made use of the Field Centre to hold their monthly team meeting, all while enjoying some amazing homemade cakes (thanks again Sue)

All involved really enjoyed the day & are already looking forward to returning in the spring to offer their assistance again.
